Unidentified Dyes and Weekend Warriors

I was expecting the price of dyes to dip a lot more this weekend after a quick rebound on Wednesday, but Friday night proved to be a rather quiet evening on the unidentified dye market.

By the way, anyone who speculated on the various colored forms of unidentified dyes made a killing. Some went as high as 2 gold in the past week! I don't think those prices will hold for the long term, so don't invest in them now. Also, as I explain in the following video, I think the time to buy unidentified dyes is over. If you bought them at 16 silver on Wednesday, it's also not the time to sell. For once it's time to wait it out!

  1. I firmly believe that they will go further up.
The only way to get unidentified dyes now is to:
    1. Play 5 (!) days and get laurels to buy 1 unidentified dye (no one in his/her right mind would do this)
    2. Combine 4 cooking-crafted dyes in the forge

The lowest you can get the cooking dyes on the TP right now is 10 silver. 4x10 = 40 silver, and this should be the value of unidentified dyes. I might be simplifying things, but something like this will probably happen.

  1. Marko, usually I agree with you, but this time I think you have been a bit to quick with your conclusion.

First of all if you look at the buy and sales volumes you can see the sales volume has increased from roughly 50k to over 70k and the buy listings have dropped, meaning the market has been flooded with unidentified dyes, prices have dropped but not as fast as you expected. I believe this is largely due to people buying large amounts of dyes as investments.

Also the remember that the patch came out on tuesday and the dip took place on wednesday, people log on and unless they are traders like us they care first about all the changes to traits and gear maybe then even WvW before caring about the dyes. Some might open them to see what they get others might sell them at any given time, so it's not weird for it to be a slow process.

As for the future of unidentified dyes, the only reasonable ways to get them (the mention of them being givem as rewards is nice but limited and I don't expect it to have mayor efect on the ecomomy) is through the mystic forge by combining 4 colored unidentified dyes. If you look at the prices of materials to create those dyes then at this moment it is not worth creating thw unidentified dyes. So after the influx from this patch there will be no new influx until the price has risen to at least 4 times the price of the lowest colored dye (at least equal or above the cost of all the materials needed to create them) as they might change over time I don't want to speculate on the price of the unidentified dyes, but everything points to a higher price even above the 35-40 range it was in before the patch. So I personally think it's still time to buy.

Just one last note, when the Chinees market opens and the prices of cooking material will likely drop due to the sudden new influx of a lot of material, that will affect the prices of colored unidentified dyes and thus of unidentified dyes.

I might be wrong, but like most MMO's I believe the Chinese market will be on its own server and not integrated with ours. Any definite info on this would be helpful.

It is stated by Anet that NA and EU will share a market, and the when Gw2 opens in China they'll have their own market separated from ours, so there won't be a sudden influx of mats..
But, I do agree that you still can buy unid dyes..

I bought 30 exotic Levvi weapons (Scarlet invasion drops) before the patch and now it's seems like everyone has gotten into a unlocking-skins-frenzy. I've already made 1,5 gold per weapon.

The Flawless Snowflake merchant strikes again!

  1. I had missed that part of the market being seperate, better for the dyes then ;)
